The Leadership Lens

During a leadership workshop I facilitated last week, one exercise generated a surprising amount of discussion.

I asked everyone to write down every responsibility they have that repeats each week. Most participants had never seen that list in one place.

The exercise took five minutes, and it immediately revealed:

  • Responsibilities that need a system

  • Responsibilities that could be delegated

  • Responsibilities that might not need to exist anymore

Try it yourself. Set a timer for five minutes and write everything you're responsible for that is done repeatedly. Every item on that list needs a decision:

  • Keep it

  • Delegate it

  • Systemize it

  • Eliminate it

That's how leaders make businesses easier to run over time.

→ Not sure how to delegate without getting disappointed, or systemize without things falling through the cracks? You're not alone. I'll cover that in our next installment, but make sure you have your list of repeating responsibilities ready :).
